B. Educational
Qualifications
This is the most critical section for eligibility.
Candidates must meet stringent criteria for both their degree and their marks.
Minimum
Qualification:
- A
Degree in Engineering in any of the 7 specified disciplines (Chemical,
Civil, Computer, Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical,
Metallurgy).
- The
degree must be a regular/full-time course from a
UGC/AICTE recognized university or institution.
Minimum
Percentage of Marks:
- General
(UR) / OBC (NCL) / EWS: Candidates must have 65% marks (average
of all semesters).
- SC
/ ST / PwBD / Departmental: Candidates must have 55%
marks (average of all semesters).
Critical Rules for Percentage Calculation: Candidates
must pay close attention to the following rules, which are strictly enforced:
- No
Rounding Off: Marks will not be rounded off to
the nearest integer. A candidate with 64.99% marks will be
considered ineligible for the 65%
requirement.
- Average
of All Semesters: The required percentage (65% or 55%) must be
the average of all semesters combined, irrespective of
the weightage given by the university to any particular year. Having 65%
in the final semester alone is not sufficient if the
overall aggregate average is lower.
- CGPA
Conversion: If the institute awards CGPA/OGPA, the conversion
formula provided by the university must be used. If the university
does not have a conversion formula, the CGPA will be
converted to a percentage by multiplying it by 10 (assuming a 10-point
scale). Candidates must be prepared to produce a certificate for this
conversion at the interview stage.
- Eligible Engineering
Disciplines & Sub-branches
SAIL has provided a detailed list of eligible B.E./B.Tech.
sub-branches that correspond to the 7 advertised disciplines. Candidates with
degrees in allied fields like Mechatronics, Power Engineering, or Information
Technology should check this table carefully to confirm their
eligibility.

Selected candidates will be offered a highly attractive
compensation package. The post carries a significant salary, both during and
after the training period.
- During
Training (1 Year): Candidates will be on training for one year
and will receive a Basic Pay of ₹ 50,000/- per month in
the pay scale of ₹50,000−1,60,000/−.
- After
Confirmation: Upon successful completion of training, candidates
will be designated as Assistant Manager (E1 Grade) and
placed in the pay scale of ₹60,000−1,80,000/−.
In addition to the Basic Pay, the post also includes:
- Dearness
Allowance (DA)
- Perquisites
under the cafeteria approach
- Benefits
such as Provident Fund (PF), Gratuity, and Leave Encashment
- Housing/HRA
and free medical facility for self and dependents.
The Cost to Company (CTC) at the minimum of
the E1 grade (post-training) will be approximately ₹ 16-17 Lakhs per
annum. It is important to note that this CTC figure excludes Performance
Related Pay (PRP) and location-based allowances, which means the actual
potential earnings are even higher.
The selection process for the SAIL Management Trainee
(Technical) is a multi-stage process designed to test domain knowledge,
aptitude, and personality. The process consists of three main
stages.
- Stage
1: Online Examination (Computer Based Test - CBT)
- Stage
2: Group Discussion (GD) and Interview
- Stage
3: Final Merit List
Phase
1: Online Examination (CBT) Details
The first and most important stage is the CBT, which is
tentatively scheduled for January or February 2026. The test will be for
200 marks and will have two distinct parts.
|
Part |
Subject |
No. of Marks |
Duration |
|
Part 1 |
Domain Knowledge Test (in your
engineering discipline) |
100 Marks |

|
Part 2 |

Key Points for CBT:
- Speed
is Critical: The time allocation is extremely challenging. The
Domain Knowledge part allows only 24 seconds per question (100
questions in 40 minutes). The Aptitude part allows 48 seconds per
question. This indicates the test is designed to measure speed and
accuracy above all else.
- Sectional
Qualification: Candidates must qualify in each of
the two parts (Domain Test and Aptitude Test) separately. The minimum
qualifying score is the 50th percentile for UR/EWS
candidates and the 40th percentile for
SC/ST/OBC(NCL)/PwBD candidates.
Phase
2: Group Discussion (GD) & Interview
Candidates who qualify in the CBT will be shortlisted for
the Group Discussion and Interview. The shortlisting will be done in a 1:3
ratio (three candidates for every one vacancy) for each discipline and
category, based on merit in the CBT.
Phase
3: Final Selection & Merit List
The final merit list for selection will be prepared by
combining the scores from all three stages. The weightage given to each stage
is the most critical strategic factor for applicants.
- Online
Examination (CBT): 75%
- Group
Discussion (GD): 10%
- Interview:
15%
This 75:10:15 weightage clearly shows that the CBT
score is the single most dominant factor in the final
selection. The online test is not just a qualifier; it is the main event.
A high score in the CBT is essential for securing a place in the final merit
list.
In the event of a tie in the final scores, the candidate
with higher marks in the CBT will be ranked higher. If the tie persists, the
candidate with higher marks in the B.E./B.Tech. qualification will be
preferred.
